Grand opening of Garden Grove Elementary's community school park
Dear friends and partners,
It has long been one of my priorities to open our schools as parks on the weekend, and this past weekend I was thrilled to celebrate the grand opening of one of ten new community school parks ([link removed]) in partnership with the City of Los Angeles. This is a win-win initiative to make our schools welcoming hubs of the communities we serve and provide more park space in areas where it's most needed. I will continue to advocate for the kind of inter-agency collaboration that makes common-sense solutions ([link removed]) like this possible.
As we work to expand this program to more of our school communities, we are also continuing to invest in more green space on our campuses ([link removed]) . In order to continue funding these and other critical modernization projects for our students, the District has placed a facilities bond on the November ballot. It has been a busy month in Board District 4! In addition to the Garden Grove park event, my team and I met with community members at Park La Brea and the LAX Coastal Education Foundation, celebrated the Olympic and Paralympic flags' arrival in LA, joined Region West's College and Career Fair, cut the ribbon on a clothing boutique for unhoused students in Venice and a new greening project at Stoner Ave ES, visited the Gabrielino-Tongva springs on the Uni HS campus, toured classrooms at Palisades ES and Palisades HS, and stopped by countless other BD4 schools to see how we can help ensure a great year ahead!
In the Spotlight: Celebrating National Principals Month at Whitman HS!
October is National Principals Month, and the students and staff at Walt Whitman Continuation High are lucky to have the wonderful Dr. Simone Charles as their school leader. Dr. Charles believes in the lasting impact of a solid education and always advocates for the opportunities her students deserve to reach their full potential, especially focused on combating racial and gender inequality within STEM fields. She also serves as the Association of CA School Administrators (ACSA) Region 16 Representative on the Equity Committee, Cultural Proficiency Director, and was named Options Principal of the Year in 2022—one of many honors over her 30 years as a committed educator.
