Hello, fellow partisans of constitutional democracy and civic education!
I know you’re inundated with campaign emails this time of year, but this is not a request for money or a vote - it’s an invitation to see that the next generation is taking democracy seriously!
This evening at 9pm and every evening for the next four weeks, the documentary Citizen Nation will be airing on PBS [[link removed]] , but can also be streamed on Amazon and Youtube. Citizen Nation follows students in the We The People program for civic education from California to Wyoming to West Virginia. It even includes students in my own classes right here in Henrico, Virginia, as they learn about the US Constitution’s history, law, and values, then compete nationally against other students in the program. The Richmond Times Dispatch [[link removed]] , Wall Street Journal [[link removed]] , and RealClear Education [[link removed]] have all already written rave reviews of the show!

We The People [[link removed]] is the premier civic education program in the nation. We The People helps students learn how to be active, engaged citizens, and the process is a real joy to watch - or to teach in the classroom as I do. This documentary is absolutely worth an hour of your time - whether it is because you want to see kids from local high schools compete in a national competition where the skill at issue is how well you can delve into the importance of the First Amendment and fair elections….or whether you just want to see a Virginia state Senator in his classroom day job!
I hope you can all find time to tune in - the We The People program is the part of my teaching career I’m most proud of, and having that program to keep my grasp of our democratic values sharp shapes my determination to push for a better future in Virginia every day!
