[link removed] [[link removed]]John, I never planned on running for public office.

For years, I was content serving my community in other ways — whether it was defending Virginians’ civil rights as the Legal Director of the ACLU of Virginia or in my private life as an organizer and advocate for my daughter, Brooke.

At only a year old, my Brooke was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Rett Syndrome.

I fought tooth and nail to ensure she had equal educational opportunities, took on government bureaucrats to ensure she obtained the Medicaid benefits she was entitled to and the medical treatment she desperately needed, and secured federal funding for Rett Syndrome and other rare diseases.

In March of 2021, the worst thing that can happen to a parent happened: Brooke passed away in her sleep without warning. She was five.

October marks International Rett Syndrome Awareness Month. Though there’s not a day that goes by without me thinking of her, I’m especially reminded of just how important it is to be a voice for those without one. To fight for those who can’t.

John, Brooke inspired me to join this fight. Now, I’m continuing to fight for you.

I’m not running for Congress to stand idly by. I’m running to be a fighter — for you, for our community, and for our future.

I’m running to unseat a man who has voted to cut Medicare and Medicaid, let our teachers go underpaid and students underserved, and spent his nearly 4-decades long career in politics working to undermine reproductive rights.

It’s not going to be easy — but critical opportunities like this rarely are. That’s why I’m asking for your help. Every dollar we raise means more voters who hear our message, more ballots cast, and greater odds that we can unseat Rob Wittman this November.

Early voting is already underway, and Election Day is just 28 days from today. The time to stand in defense of our future is now, and I need you on my side. In these final moments of this race, can I count on you to donate $ or whatever you can afford to our campaign for Congress? [[link removed]]

Thank you, John. Together, we can — and will — win this thing.

Sincerely,
Leslie Mehta
