Worried about the election? Well, seize this opportunity to relax and live in the moment at 350Brooklyn’s Solarpunk Party. We’ll share light food and drink, conversation and music under the October full moon up on the roof at Brooklyn SolarWorks (rain date is October 18.) Disaster relief in the wake of Hurricane Helene
The news has been stunning: more than 100 people dead, thousands without power with roads blocked, access to food and water cut off. Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky all hit hard. Some resources are The New York Times’ list of ways to help, a grassroots mutual aid network, and a more homegrown list for North Carolina. Yes, we know this is far from the first disaster fueled by a warming world and it is far from the last. And yet, each one matters.
Urge the mayor to sign the new solar buildings bill
Climate Works for All rallied with Councilmember Sandy Nurse and Climate Jobs NY at City Hall on Sept. 26 ahead of a council vote approving Int. 353, a bill that requires the city to install 100 megawatts of solar panels on city-owned buildings by 2030 and 150 megawatts by 2035. The bill gives priority to installations in disadvantaged areas. Email Mayor Adams to urge him to sign the bill into law.
Power Hour: be the October surprise!
Mondays, 12 - 1 pm
Our amazing volunteers make lots of calls about climate change, and we know that politicians listen most when they feel like their careers are on the line. That’s why we’re teaming up with the Environmental Voter Project and our allies at Third Act and NYC Climate Families to call climate-concerned Americans across the country and turn them into a formidable voting bloc. Join us for upcoming phone banks on Tuesday, October 15 at 12pm (with Third Act) and every Wednesday evening in October (with NYC Climate Families). Together WE will be the October surprise!
Citibank: stop selling total bonds!
On 10/2, "TotalEnergies Investor Day" 350BK's People vs. Fossil Fuels Workgroup organized an action at Citi HQ to call on Citi to stop underwriting Total bonds. While Citi has joined 27 banks that have committed to not funding EACOP (the East African Crude Oil Pipeline that will displace more than 100,000 people), they are the largest US underwriter of TotalEnergies' bonds. Total has financed 63% of EACOP and was recently linked to a massacre at their fracked gas facility in Mozambique (see the Politico story). For 10 years the primarily Black community of Arlington, Texas has faced a health crisis due to Total's 400 Fracked gas well pads in their community. Hochul fails NY on climate!
Check out Hochul's climate report card
This summer we saw a number of reports about New York State's progress on addressing the climate crisis--or lack thereof. Reports from the State Comptroller, the Public Service Commission, Colunbia's Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and others showed that Governor Hochul, whatever her rhetoric, has failed to ensure that her administration is carrying out the requirements of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Read the report card from Climate Can't Wait, a coalition of climate groups from all over the state (including 350Brooklyn.)
Voting organization of the week:
Environmental Voter Project
The Environmental Voter Project is a nonpartisan nonprofit focused on a simple high leverage solution to the problem of the 8 million environmental voters who didn’t vote in the 2020 election. They accurately identify this group and efficiently convert them into a critical mass of consistent voters that will soon be too big for politicians to ignore. The goal is to gain true environmental and climate leadership by flooding the electorate and making it impossible for politicians to run for office without leading on the environment. They do this by canvassing, calling, texting, and sending mailings and digital ads to environmental voters before every local, state, and federal election. You can volunteer to help by signing up on their website.
