It often feels like education is the least-discussed issue in presidential elections, and to some extent, this year’s race is no exception. And yet, as Sarah Butrymowicz points out ([link removed]) , many of the topics Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are talking about directly affect and involve schools and colleges.

That’s why The Hechinger Report put together a guide to some of the key education issues underlying the discourse, including abortion, the economy and immigration. You can also check out how proposals in the 2025 Presidential Transition Project — known as Project 2025 ([link removed]) and designed for a future Trump administration — could change education.

Earlier this year, our team took a closer and more specific look at what education policies could advance, or be dialed back, if Harris and running mate Tim Walz ([link removed]) are elected, as well as if Trump and his pick for VP, JD Vance ([link removed]) win. This week we asked two experts to weigh in with their own views of what we might see under a Harris presidency ([link removed]) and once again under Trump ([link removed]) .
