October Newsletter

Dear Colleagues and Allies,

Welcome to GATJ’s October newsletter. Read along for highlights from recent events and updates from our regional members.

UN Tax Convention

GATJ’s Secretariat at the negotiations, alongside our members and fellow tax justice advocates.

A step forward in the creation of the new global tax rules

On August 16th, States finalised the terms of reference for the UN Tax Convention - the mandate for the new global tax rules. The terms of reference features many of the core demands by the tax justice movement including the fair allocation of taxing rights, curbing illicit financial flows, and taxing multinationals and the rich. The terms of reference are a major step forward in the establishment of an international tax system that is transparent, equitable, fair, and where all States can participate on equal footing. Now, States will officially adopt the terms of reference at the current session of the UN General Assembly and then the negotiations for the Convention will go until 2027. Ā

Throughout the negotiations, GATJ, including our members from RJFALC, TJNA, TJ-E, and TAFJA, made interventions on the ground. GATJ has long campaigned for the establishment of a global tax body at the UN and we applaud this achievement in the fight for tax justice.

The FfD Chronicle can be read here.

GATJ, as the coordinator of the Tax Justice workstream of the CS FfD Mechanism, co-produced the FfD Chronicle. Throughout the negotiations, the FfD Chronicle informed delegates on civil society demands, with articles on human rights, the environment, civil society participation, and even a few memes.
