John,
We’ve been telling you something’s off at The New York Times.
After more than a year of election coverage that often normalized Trump’s increasingly incoherent and unhinged campaign, the so-called paper of record finally published a story this weekend highlighting his declining mental state.
Here’s what The Times finally had to say about Donald Trump, less than 30 days from Election Day:
"A review of Mr. Trump’s rallies, interviews, statements, and social media posts finds signs of change since he first took the political stage in 2015. He has always been discursive and has often been untethered to truth, but with the passage of time his speeches have grown darker, harsher, longer, angrier, less focused, more profane, and increasingly fixated on the past."
Of course, all of this has been true for a long, long time. So why is The Times just now saying it?
Why have they spent so much time "sanewashing" Trump, normalizing his violent rhetoric toward immigrants and political opponents, and soft-pedaling his most unhinged moments?
The frustration is compounded by The Times’ double standard.
After one poor debate performance, they called on Joe Biden to drop out. Yet, they said nothing when Trump spewed dozens of lies, including the baseless and racist claim that immigrants were eating pets in Ohio.
They also continue to amplify the right-wing talking point that Kamala Harris lacks substance by pushing the dubious idea that undecided voters don’t trust her because she hasn’t done enough media appearances or provided enough policy details. Meanwhile, Trump is flirting with eugenics by promoting the vile notion that immigrants have inferior genetics.
John, don’t get us wrong—finally calling out Trump’s lack of fitness for office is a great start. But with less than 30 days to go, it’s only the beginning if The New York Times truly wants to live up to its billing as the paper of record.
