News from Representative Himes

Dear Friend,

Autumn has arrived! I hope you had a restful end to your summer and have settled into the new routines changing seasons bring. As we welcome the fall foliage, I wanted to share some notable moments from the last few weeks.

Paris Comes to Stamford:

I toured NBC Sports in Stamford to see the operation responsible for beaming the Olympics and Paralympics across the country. Watching Team USA, including five athletes from CT-04, compete was a highlight of my summer and it was all thanks to work done right here in Southwestern Connecticut. Thank you all for bringing the joy of the games into our homes – looking forward to Milan Cortina 2026!

Expanding Housing Options:

Our country’s housing shortage has become a major obstacle for many Americans. It is critical the federal government invest in our nation’s housing stock to lower costs and expand options. That is why I was thrilled to secure nearly $2 million in federal funding to construct nine new apartments in Bridgeport’s West End. Projects like the Hanover Street Development are vital to ensuring families can live in the communities they love in homes that meet their needs.

Youth Development:

The outcomes Domus Kids in Stamford achieves for the at-risk youth enrolled in its programs are a testament to how every child can succeed when they feel supported and encouraged. It was a privilege to learn more about the organization which, just last year, served more than 1,500 students across its 13 programs. Domus estimates about one in five young adults in Connecticut are disconnected or disengaged, further underscoring the importance of empowering youth to pursue a path toward self-sufficiency.

Remembering 9/11:

I visited the 9/11 Memorial at Sherwood Island in Westport to pay my respects to the thousands of lives lost on that tragic day 23 years ago. There, inscribed in stone, are the names of 161 victims with Connecticut-ties who died in the attacks. We gathered to share their stories and hold their memories dear, all the while reaffirming our collective commitment to Never Forget.

Flood Recovery:

On August 18th, Western Connecticut was devastated by a once-in-a-thousand-year storm. Many across the state incurred severe property damage to their homes and businesses, most of which was not covered by insurance. In all, the losses amounted to more than $300 million. I joined local officials and emergency management representatives in Oxford after the storm to chart our community’s road to recovery.

With support from Connecticut’s congressional delegation, President Biden announced that individuals whose properties sustained damage are eligible to apply for personal and business recovery assistance including grants for temporary housing and home repairs as well as low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, among other programs.
