LGBTQ youth are facing unprecedented levels of bullying and harassment. Nearly 70% of LGBTQ students feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression, and almost half of transgender and nonbinary youth have seriously considered suicide in the past year. These are not just statistics—these are young lives at risk. That is why we are asking you to go purple for LGBTQ youth on Spirit Day. It’s more than just a day. It’s a movement. It’s our opportunity to say “enough” and show up for young people as allies, advocates, and as human beings. Taking action is easy. All you need to do is: Pledge to stand up for LGBTQ youth. By adding your name to the Spirit Day pledge, you commit to speaking out against bullying and discrimination, wherever and whenever you see it. Wear purple on Spirit Day, October 17. This small but bold act of visibility sends a powerful message to every LGBTQ young person that not only are they not alone; they are loved and supported, and their lives matter. Double your impact for LGBTQ youth! In honor of Spirit Day, GLAAD board member and activist, Frankie Grande, will match all donations dollar for dollar, up to $10,000! Double your gift today!
Let’s show LGBTQ youth that there is a vast community standing behind them, ready to fight for their dignity and their future. Take the Spirit Day Pledge, and take a stand against bullying. Together, we can create a world where LGBTQ youth feel safe to be themselves every single day. P.S. Don’t forget to tag your purple pics on social media with #SpiritDay and @glaad! We can’t wait to see everyone’s fabulous purple outfits on October 17!
