At theSummit of the Future ([link removed]) at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 22-23 September, world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future—a landmark declaration pledging concrete actions towards a safer, more peaceful, sustainable and inclusive world for tomorrow’s generations. Ahead of the UN Summit of the Future ([link removed]) , the Action Days ([link removed]) provided a venue to discuss actionable steps and hold frank conversations between UN, Member States, civil society, youth, academia, local and regional governments, and the private sector on the future of people and planet.

HOPE IN ACTION Art Exhibition Unveiling at the Summit of the Future Action Days

The Opening Ceremony ([link removed]) of the Action Days featured the unveiling of the HOPE IN ACTION art exhibition ([link removed]) , which was curated by the UN SDG Action Campaign and the HUG with the support of the UN Youth Office. This exhibition shows the role of creativity as a catalyst for advocacy, action, and hope, demonstrating the crucial role of young voices in shaping a more just and sustainable future.

At the Youth Action Day, “#YouthLead for the Future” the UN Secretary-General engaged in lively conversations ([link removed]) with youth leaders and underscored that “we will not solve today’s problems without including civil society and youth”. Sustainable Development for All
Day 2 of the Summit of the Future Action Days ([link removed]) focused on multistakeholder partnerships and action in three sessions: a digital future for all; a peaceful future for all; and a sustainable future for all. ([link removed])

The leaders engaging in the “Sustainable Future for All” track discussed all aspects of financing for development, including the need for a reform of the current international financial architecture and the tackling of the debt crises.

Video Highlighting the Cost of the Debt Crisis on achieving the #GlobalGoals
At the Addressing debt challenges for sustainable development session, a video was launched on the global debt crisis and its impact on achieving the SDGs, which was produced by the UN Trade and Development with support from the UN SDG Action Campaign and the United Nations Development Programme.

** C20 Side Event on Fair, Inclusive, and Anti-Racist Economies to Leave No One Behind

The Civil Society 20 (C20), the official civil society engagement platform of the G20, with the presence of representatives from Brazil, South Africa and UN Women, organized the Summit of the Future Side Event “Fair, Inclusive, and Anti-Racist Economies to Leave No One Behind”. Marina Ponti, Global Director of the UN SDG Action Campaign, spoke at the C20 event alongside Janja Lula da Silva, First Lady of Brazil; Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, UN Assistant Secretary-General; Zane Dangor, South Africa Sherpa for G20; and other leaders. The discussions centered on the importance of pursuing gender equality in public policies, tackling poverty and hunger, reforming the current international financial architecture and it featured the presentation by Brazil of the Global Alliance Against Hunger. The event was moderated by the C20 Sherpa Alessandra Nilo.

** Insights from the SDG Media Zone

The UN SDG Media Zone ([link removed]) , held during the UN General Assembly from 23-27 September 2024 featured dialogues on how to accelerate action towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Unlocking Economic Opportunities for Women’s Empowerment

The world is at a pivotal moment for gender equality, especially for women in poor or rural communities, who are disproportionately impacted by poverty, climate change, and crises. The session "Unlocking Economic Opportunities for Women’s Empowerment", moderated by Deutsche Welle’s Janelle Dumalaon, featured Niels Annen, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development in Germany, Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UN Trade and Development, and Foteini Papagioti, Senior Global Policy Advisor at the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW). It addressed the systemic barriers to gender equality and women’s empowerment and suggested some policy reforms to ensure financial inclusion of women and girls.

Shaping a Path to Inclusive Prosperity

The world is off course towards the SDGs, with rising inequalities, but change can happen quickly if people make choices aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The session entitled "Shaping a Path to Inclusive Prosperity," moderated by Laura Pepe, RAI Journalist, featured Stefano Gatti, Director General for Development Cooperation for the Government of Italy, Lucia Silva, Chief Sustainability Officer at Assicurazioni Generali and Marina Ponti, Global Director of the UN SDG Action Campaign. It discussed how global governance frameworks, business practices, and individual actions can accelerate the transition to a more equitable and sustainable society. The HOPE IN ACTION art exhibition was also shown during the event.

The Power of Art for the 2030 Agenda

Nanette Braun from the UN Department of Global Communications led a conversation on the power of art for sustainable development with Birgitte Hagemann Snabe from Art 2030, Audrey Decker from Street Art for Mankind, and Tina Survilla Lindell from the HUG ([link removed]) , which collaborated with the UN SDG Action Campaign for the Hope in Action art exhibition at the Summit of the Future ([link removed]) . They discussed how art intersects with activism to drive awareness and action for a better world. From powerful murals to life-changing installations, the session highlighted how art and artists are pivotal in sparking discussions, changing perceptions, and rallying action toward achieving the 2030 Agenda.

The UN SDG Action Campaign will continue to facilitate the engagement of civil society organizations, youth, and other stakeholders in key decision-making processes. This includes the G20 Social Summits, the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, the World Summit for Social Development and other milestones.  
Road to the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4)

We are pleased to share some engagement opportunities ahead of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development ([link removed]) (FfD4) that will take place from June 30 to 3 July 2025 in Spain.

* Call for Side Events Proposals for the Multistakeholder hearing now open ([link removed])  until 15 October

* Call for Input to the Elements Paper  ([link removed]) Inputs are due 15 October on the following guiding questions: “What are the key financing policy reforms and solutions that the fourth International Conference on Financing for Development should deliver? How could the Conference strengthen the follow-up process, to ensure accountability to and full implementation of commitments made?”
* Call for Panels: Financing for Development Dialogues ([link removed]) : think tanks, universities, research networks, and other relevant academic stakeholders to submit proposals for panels for the Financing for Development Dialogues: from Evidence to Action on 2 December 2024 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York by 14 October 2024.

* 10-14 February 2025 (duration tbc): Third PrepCom Session
