                                                    October 7, 2024

Dr. Michael Goldstein, the Republican nominee for the Fourth Congressional District in Connecticut and his Democratic opponent Jim Himes were invited to speak and take questions at Temple Sinai, a Reform Synagogue in Stamford, Connecticut. Both attended.

But only one candidate was booed before he opened his mouth. That candidate was Dr. Goldstein.

Dr. Goldstein does not wear his faith on his sleeve, but he is a member of a synagogue in Greenwich. His charming wife Belle’s father was shot in the leg fighting the Nazis in Poland. He removed the bullet with his penknife. Her mother and two aunts survived concentration camps and all thrived when they immigrated to America after the war. So naturally Dr. Goldstein and his family are more attuned to antisemitism and Israel’s survival than most people.

But Dr. Goldstein is a Republican who supports the nominee of the Republican Party, Donald Trump. And if polls and the behavior of the congregants of Temple Sinai is any indication, at least two-thirds of the Jewish vote will go to these Democratic nominees.

This may have seemed reasonable in the past as Jewish voters tend to be more liberal than the general population, but things have changed. Jewish voters who believe Israeli’s survival to be paramount should consider the following:

President Trump moved the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as promised during his campaign. Previous presidents who made the same promise reneged. In fact, the area where the embassy is enclosed is now called Trump Square.

President Trump instituted sanctions on Iranian oil exports with the hope their government would not longer fund Israeli’s enemies. It worked. Iran’s foreign reserves fell from $120 billion to $4 billion and there was a chance the Ayatollah would be overthrown. There were no attacks on Israel during his presidency.

President Trump’s Abraham accords were yielding progress in securing Middle East peace. Henry Kissinger was amazed at Trump’s success.

      President Trump has Jewish grandchildren.

President Biden discontinued the negotiations of the Abraham accords and lifted the sanctions on Iran. Congressman Himes supported this policy.

Iran was able to fund Hamas who then launched a terrorist attack against Israel, killing over 1,200 Israelis, videotaping the raping of Israeli women, killing babies and taking hostages.

Israel launched an invasion into Gaza to stop Hamas.

Antisemitic riots then occurred at leading liberal elite universities. The presidents of MIT, Harvard and UPenn all stated to Congress that students advocating the genocide of Jews were covered by free speech. The Independent candidate, Ben Wesley, against both Himes and Goldstein in this race believes Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and has been endorsed by Justice for Palestine in Congress.

Jewish students at Columbia University were told not to wear Yarmulkes or the Star of David. Nonetheless, Jewish students were attacked by other students. Some were arrested but Manhattan district Attorney (a Democrat) dropped the charges.

Hezbollah and Iran have now bombed Israel, who is now fighting a war on three fronts.

Iran is much closer to developing nuclear weapons.

President Biden and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris are trying to bully Prime Minister Netanyahu into calling a cease fire even though none of Israeli’s enemies plan to stop their attacks or release any hostages. Harris will not even call Netanyahu an ally!

Antisemitic incidents have skyrocketed in Europe and the United States. 65% of hate crimes in the United States are committed against Jewish people yet only 2% of the population is Jewish!

For many Jewish voters, especially women, the composition of the Supreme Court especially with regards to abortion rights is a major issue. But is Israel’s survival also important? Given the respective records of the Trump and Biden/Harris administration, who will fight for Israel and against antisemitism?

Clearly it is President Trump along with Dr. Michael Goldstein. Israel has not had a better friend in the White House in President Trump since Harry Truman.

Perhaps Jewish voters believe that Harris and the Democrats are tolerating antisemitism and demanding an Israeli ceasefire as a ploy to keep Arab voters in the Democratic fold, especially in the swing state of Michigan. Perhaps they believe that after the election, Democratic support for Israel will increase and antisemitism will be prosecuted. Perhaps they are right.

     Perhaps.

But will Israel be around in fifty years?

Jews living in Israel have gotten the message and support President Trump over Kamala Harris by 54% to 24%.

And American Jews will have to decide who their real friends are, Trump and Goldstein or Harris and Himes.
