Children's National Health System Pilots Immi to Help Children and Families

The doctors of the Children’s Health Center at Adams Morgan (CHC-Adams Morgan), a primary care clinic at Children’s National Health System in Washington D.C. are experts in pediatric health. A few years ago Dr. Daniel Newman and Dr. Lanre Falusi noticed an influx of Central American children, arriving to reunite with their families after long journeys, or months in immigration detention. The children needed medical and legal assistance. Some had upcoming immigration court dates. Their families needed help to renew temporary legal status and find options for permanent residency. The doctors also saw a large number of child patients who are citizens, but whose families live in fear because the parents are undocumented.

The CHC-Adams Morgan team wanted to provide in-house legal support and connect clients to community resources. Volunteer medical students began sharing the Immigration Paths Quiz on immi.org with parents in their clinic. The quiz helps the parent understand the family's immigration options. The medical students facilitate referrals to local, low-cost or free legal services.

Over the next year, the Children’s Health Center will identify resources to create an in-house immigration medical-legal partnership. The Immigration Advocates Network will continue to support their work by building a new feature on immi to help with referrals.

Pro Bono and Volunteer Projects

Many thanks to VISTA Nancy Larcher, for her work this past year on the #StandWithImmigrants site to connect volunteers to trainings and opportunities. We wish Nancy well as she starts her new job at the New York City Bar Justice Center. And we welcome Dominic Hussain, joining Pro Bono Net this summer for a VISTA service year. Dominic is a recent college graduate and prospective law student, interested in social equity and legal advocacy. Their VISTA project will focus on a new Remote Legal Support (RLS) manual and project to connect rural and underserved communities to pro bono legal assistance. Dominic is currently analyzing results from IAN's national survey to gauge the field's interest and experience in remote legal support projects. They will work with partners and across legal sectors to publish the manual and survey results later this year.

The Latest from the Immigration Advocates Network

This is the monthly digest from the Immigration Advocates Network and our partners in immigrant advocacy.

As the Trump Administration has announced increasingly restrictive enforcement and asylum policies, advocates have filed lawsuits and secured court orders to prevent some of the policies from going forward while litigation is pending. In other cases, advocates have created practice advisories to inform legal strategy. We've posted background information and litigation updates on the policy to restrict asylum for people who transit through third countries. Here is the Attorney General's recent decision in Matter of L-E-A- and a practice pointer for family-based asylum claims. Advocates filed a lawsuit last week to challenge the Administration's plan to subject anyone in the U.S. for less than two years to expedited removal. Meanwhile, Make the Road New York created a bilingual community education flyer to help people understand expedited removal. USCIS announced the new public charge rules, and published additional information. Two California counties are challenging the new rules. Other advocates plan to litigate. Check back for updates!

About Immigration Advocates Network

The Immigration Advocates Network (IAN), a program of Pro Bono Net, is dedicated to expanding access to immigration legal resources and information through collaboration and technology. IAN was created in 2007 by leading immigrants' rights organizations, to increase access to justice for low-income immigrants and strengthen the capacity of organizations serving them. We create our own tools, build platforms for others, and work with partners to harness the power of technology and collaboration to better support immigrants and their advocates.
