Today, we reflect on the tragic anniversary of October 7, a day that set off a new cycle of violence that has claimed countless innocent lives. One year ago, Hamas launched an attack that claimed the lives of hundreds of Israeli civilians—an atrocity condemned worldwide.The Israeli government responded by unleashing a horrific war on Gaza.
At NIAC, on day one we called for our elected leaders to work urgently to halt this new cycle of violence and secure a ceasefire to save lives. Like many, we saw the potential for immense human suffering if this vicious cycle wasn’t stopped — and the serious risk that this conflict would reach Iran. Over a year later, our own government’s inability to make the tough choices needed to end this conflict and protect innocent lives has helped realize those fears. Tens of thousands have been killed as the war in Gaza has spread to Lebanon, and we now stand on the brink of a wider regional war with Iran. Without immediate action, the devastation we’ve witnessed will only grow, threatening countless more lives across the region.
We are committed to doing everything in our power to prevent further escalation. We are working day and night to ensure that the violence does not spiral into a catastrophic war with Iran. But we can’t do this alone.
