Message from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Good afternoon, everyone and happy Monday.

Today we observe a solemn anniversary. This October 7th marks the one-year anniversary of Hamas’s devastating attack on Israel and innocent civilians. During this dark day, Hamas’ attack left over 1,200 Israelis dead, and more than 40 Americans were killed.

Hundreds of innocent hostages were taken captive as well, and as of today, there are believed to be dozens of hostages who are still alive, four of them being Americans.

One year later and my commitment remains steadfast for our close ally, Israel. I will continue supporting the country’s right to self-defense and I will continue advocating for the complete return of hostages. Today, my prayers are with the people of Israel, especially with the families who lost loved ones. May they rest in peace.

It’s been great to be back in Wisconsin this month—I’ve had the opportunity to meet with many local businesses, facilities, and community leaders across the district. Last week I was particularly excited to visit Harley-Davidson’s Powertrain Operations in Menomonee Falls where the team produces engines!

Fun fact: founded in 1903, Harley-Davidson is one of only two major American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression. The company is going strong, and its spirit is especially alive and well here in Wisconsin! I always have a great time with the Harley-Davidson team, and I appreciate the team for having me visit.

Last week, I joined twenty of my colleagues in the House in sending a letter to urge U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to continue dialogue with Mexico’s new president – Claudia Sheinbaum – over Mexico’s ban on American corn imports and other trade barriers.

I can’t say it enough—farmers are the backbone of Wisconsin’s economy, and even more, they play an important role in the cultural fabric that defines our great state. This Mexican ban on U.S. corn imports impacts genetically modified versions of corn, which account for over 90% of the corn grown in the U.S. With this ban impacting nearly every corn farmer in the U.S. I will continue to put pressure on our administration to make headway in this dialogue on corn imports. You can read the full letter here.
