When I reach out to you, I always prefer to talk about the positive consequences of winning — the progress we can get done for the American people if we’re successful in November. But as we get closer to the election, I also want to talk a bit about the consequences of losing, because they are sobering. This is the district that could decide control of the House, so falling short means an extremist MAGA majority in Congress. A majority of my Republican colleagues in Congress have signed onto a plan to ban abortion and block access to IVF. If we lose this race, that legislation could become law. Just this weekend, Speaker Johnson refused to say Trump legitimately lost the 2020 election. If we lose this race, he and his fellow election deniers will be empowered to sow doubt about the 2024 election outcome. And then there’s Republicans’ Project 2025 agenda: a blueprint for demolishing our public education system, rolling back the progress we’ve made fighting climate change, and ripping away access to affordable health care — all of which they’ll be in a strong position to do if we lose this race and give them the House. I’m not bringing up these possibilities because I want to scare you. I’m bringing them up because I believe it’s important to be clear-eyed about the stakes of this election — and because I know that if we all stand together and commit to taking action in these final 29 days, we can win this race and stop the extreme MAGA agenda in its tracks.
