Yá étééh John ,
My name is Tara Benally, and I’m Stewardship Utah’s organizer for the Arizona program. I grew up in southern San Juan County, Utah. I am of Hopi descent. The Diné (Navajo) Bítahníí clan (Folded Arms People) raised my family, and I was born to the Diné clan Nitłachíí (Marks on the Cheek people).
Did you know there are only 29 days until election day? That's right, November 5th is around the corner, and Stewardship Utah is working hard to elect climate champions across Utah. But are you familiar with our work to register voters in northern Arizona, too?

Our rural team works to carry out our mission beyond the Wasatch Front–with a strong presence on the Utah Portion of the Navajo Nation. As Stewardship Utah, we plan to remove more barriers to voting for our Indigenous neighbors, host civic engagement educational opportunities, and build power with local leaders to establish just representation across San Juan County. Stewardship Utah is also partnering with two Indigenous-led organizations, Wingbeat 88 and Natives Outdoors, to run the largest voter registration and get-out-the-vote program ever seen on the Navajo Nation in Arizona in 2024.
To date, our Arizona team has registered 11,530 voters on the Navajo Nation. Today, October 7th, is the last day to register to vote in AZ, and we at Stewardship Utah are looking to surpass 12,500 registered voters thanks to the efforts of those on the ground doing this vital work. But registering voters is only half the battle! With less than a month to the election, our focus now turns to getting out the vote, ensuring all new voters feel empowered to cast their ballot and have the means to access polling locations safely and conveniently.

Get-out-the-vote programs are common across the country, but among Indigenous communities, they are as crucial as ever. Rural communities face barriers to voting that many do not. Addressing errors, long travel times, lack of resources for childcare, and even intentional voter suppression by regional governments all mean more difficulty in making their voices heard. We at Stewardship Utah have a plan, but we need your support to make sure all those on the Arizona Navajo Nation can cast their ballot this November.
To support our get-out-the-vote program, would you donate $11.53, $15.30, or even $115.30 today? This money goes directly to our staff’s efforts on the ground in northern Arizona, contacting voters and helping them to create voting plans–crucial steps to ensure all voices are heard. We will be on the ground, through the election, working in these communities to elevate Indigenous communities and protect everyone’s right to ballot access.
Please consider a donation today. Your support is crucial to the success of our program, and we are grateful for the gifts that so many have given to our efforts thus far!
