Hi John,

For weeks I have called for a plan, not just a date, to reopen our economy. We all want to get Texas moving again and alleviate new financial stresses that are impacting countless families -- but we also need to ensure that our path forward continues to protect the health and well-being of all Texans. Moving ahead without clear benchmarks puts the lives of North Texans at risk and could further harm our economy.

Right now we’re seeing state leaders in Austin move forward without any flexibility for regions like North Texas that are experiencing severe outbreaks. Salons and gyms will soon be allowed to re-open, against the advice of medical experts like Dr. Deborah Birx from the White House’s Coronavirus Task.

John, this isn’t partisan, it's just common sense.

‪The impacts of this reopening will not be felt equally.

Hourly workers will be forced to choose between their jobs and their health. These workers are disproportionately women and people of color, many of whom are also more likely to suffer from conditions that make COVID-19 more lethal.

We need plans that are backed by science in place to ensure that we’re doing our due-diligence to protect these vulnerable populations. To beat this virus and save the economy we need to make a dramatic investment to ramp up testing, tracing, and treatment. Expanding Medicaid would also bring health care coverage to as many as 2 million Texans -- many of which are our frontline workers -- and thousands of jobs to our state.

Restoring our economy and protecting North Texans don’t have to be mutually exclusive. If we listen to the advice of our health care experts we can get back on track.
