She served in the Army Reserve and the Iowa Army National Guard for more than two decades, including leading a unit in Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

She was the first woman elected to federal office in Iowa, and the first female combat veteran to be elected to the U.S. Senate.
