Dear Friends,

I wanted to update you on some of my recent work in Washington, D.C. and the district that may be of help to you.

At home in New Haven, I joined Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina Khan and CitySeed to discuss efforts to address corporate price gouging, high food prices, and the rising cost of living. Enough is enough – I am focused on fighting back against the giant corporations squeezing Americans’ wallets from every angle.

I also joined the UNITE HERE picket line to show support to the over 1,250 hotel workers, and the 120 in New Haven, who made their voices heard as they demand fair wages, job security, and respect for all hotel workers. When workers win, America wins!

In Prospect, I was happy to award the town with nearly $960,000 which I helped secure through Community Project Funding. These funds will support the installation of a water main to connect the residents of Coachlight Circle to the city water supply. Support for projects like this, which help towns like Prospect make critical infrastructure improvements, will always be at the top of my economic agenda.

In Washington, I met with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy alongside my colleagues. I continue to stand with the free people of Ukraine as they fight to defend democracy and their independence. I believe we have the duty to ensure democracy and freedom triumph over authoritarianism.

I also introduced the Toxic Free Food Act, a bill that would require the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protect Americans from dangerous chemicals in their food, by allowing chemical manufacturers to designate chemicals as ‘generally recognized as safe' (GRAS), without FDA review or public notice. I believe when Americans are at the grocery store, they should be confident that the food they are purchasing is safe for consumption.

This month, I celebrated the finalization of the FDA’s new rule that requires women to be told they have dense breasts and what additional screenings they may need to detect breast cancer. Ninety-nine percent of women who receive an early breast cancer diagnosis survive it. Women with dense breasts are at higher risk of developing breast cancer, but having dense breasts also makes it more difficult to detect that cancer. While this is a critical first step, it is imperative we pass my Find It Early Act to ensure women do not face exorbitant out of pocket costs for breast ultrasounds or MRIs.

In Case You Missed It (ICYMI): Earlier this month FEMA declared the flooding on August 18th a Major Disaster. Whether you are an individual or a business you should first file a claim with your private insurance, then file for assistance with FEMA by clicking here or visit one of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) two Business Recovery Centers (BRCs) in Connecticut, including one in Oxford Town Hall. SBA is opening the centers, and FEMA will be soon to follow, to assist Connecticut businesses and residents with losses due to the severe storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides that impacted our communities in August. Scheduling an appointment is best - to do so please click here.

I will continue my efforts in Congress to get results for the families and communities of the Third District. Should you have any questions or if I can assist you with a federal agency, please contact my District office at 203-562-3718. To follow what I'm working on both in Washington and in Connecticut, visit my Facebook page, follow me on Twitter, or follow me on Instagram. You can also now sign up to receive SMS updates here.
