Friend of MCVAF,

Voting for candidates at all levels of government who will protect the environment and safeguard our democracy is essential.

In 2022, control of the Maine State Legislature was decided by just 1,218 votes in key districts. This year’s election could be just as close – and turning out every last voter who is committed to climate action and a clean and healthy environment is critically important.

Read on for some news and actions you can take to help turn out environmental voters this November.

District Spotlight
One race we’re going all in on is State House District 37, which includes the towns of Winterport, Searsport, and Stockton Springs. We’ve endorsed candidate Scott Cuddy because of his strong voting record and commitment to protecting the environment and acting on the climate crisis.

Scott Cuddy is a former State Representative born right in Winterport. He is a journeyman electrician, a member of the RSU 22 School Board, and is dedicated to working families and the environment.

During his time in the legislature, he served on the Energy, Utilities, and Technology committee and consistently voted to protect the environment, including voting to phase out toxic “forever chemicals” that pollute the environment and water, 1 support climate education in direct response to the needs of Maine teachers, 2 and require Maine's Public Utilities Commission to prioritize climate and equity in its decisions 3 – earning Cuddy a 100% on MCV’s 2022 Environmental Scorecard.

John Dieffenbacher-Krall, Executive Director of the Wabanaki Alliance, recently authored this letter to the editor [[link removed]] in the Bangor Daily News about Cuddy’s commitment to justice and recognizing Wabanaki sovereignty.

“Scott exemplifies many of the values voters want in an elected official: a deep commitment to public service, integrity, honesty, empathy for the challenging situations people can face in their lives, genuine humility, hard-working, accessible, principled, and solution-oriented” – John Dieffenbacher-Krall, Executive Director of the Wabanaki Alliance.

Scott Cuddy is running against incumbent Reagan Paul , who has repeatedly voted against protections for clean water and the environment earning her a lifetime score of 0% on our annual Environmental Scorecard. She has threatened our health and the environment by voting to allow the ongoing use of pesticides that contain toxic PFAS chemicals, 4 blocked protections that prevent lead poisoning in Maine loons, 5 and supported censorship in Maine schools. 6 And, she wants to repeal policies that safeguard our democracy, such as ranked choice voting. 7

Her positions are so extreme that our partners at the national League of Conservation Voters, recently named her to their “Dirty Dozen in the States” [[link removed]] – a list of the twelve worst environmental candidates at the state level in the entire country.
