Today, we remember the more than 1,200 innocent men, women and children who were murdered by Hamas terrorists one year ago, and the 240 taken hostage that day. And while today may be Oct 7, 2024, for the families of those murdered and kidnapped, it’s still Oct 7, 2023. They've spent every minute of the past year fighting to #BringThemAllHome. They shouldn’t have to wait another moment.

We’re here to tell them: they’re not alone.

BREAKING: New Antisemitism Data. There have been more than 10,000 antisemitic incidents in the United States since the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack in Israel, according to new ADL
[link removed]
data. This is the highest
[link removed]
number of incidents ever recorded in any one-year period since ADL started incident tracking in 1979, and a 200 percent increase year over year. More than 1,200 of these antisemitic incidents happened on college campuses, representing a 500 percent increase year over year. “Today, we mourn the victims of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in Israel, marking one year since the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. From that day on, Jewish Americans haven’t had a single moment of respite,” said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt.

Princeton. Last weekend, students at New Jersey’s Princeton University discovered anti-Israel
[link removed]
stickers around campus with messages like “Death to Israel” and “Tel Aviv will burn.” The university’s Department of Public Safety has opened a new investigation, and Vice Provost Michele Minter condemned the incident in a Monday statement to the student newspaper: “Princeton deplores all hateful speech, which undermines our values of respect and inclusion. Anonymous, offensive speech — particularly that which includes rhetorical threats of violence — is especially unwelcome.”

Temple. Temple University in Philadelphia has
[link removed]
suspended the Temple chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine following the group’s recent protest at a career fair, which led to the arrest of at least one Temple student. This interim suspension applies to all SJP operations, including meetings, activities, socials and philanthropic events. “Failure to abide by university policies and these guidelines has consequences for student organizations as well as individual students,” said a Temple spokesperson. Notably, all four students arrested during the career fair protest had their charges dropped by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Thankfully, the university is working with prosecutors to provide
additional materials to charge those individuals.

Tufts. School administrators have
[link removed]
suspended the Tufts University chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, citing a September 30 Instagram post from the group allegedly “featuring individuals with assault rifles/weapons, instructing students to ‘Join the Student Intifada!’ and to ‘escalate’ at an event planned for the anniversary of the October 7 attack.” This conduct, the university said, left “no choice but to impose Interim Suspension,” effective immediately until the conduct process is concluded.

Columbia. Columbia University’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter (which has been suspended from Columbia) has called for a
[link removed]
“walkout” later this morning in their own bizarre way to mark the day. In light of all that has happened at the Morningside Heights campus, this is not surprising news. But what is interesting is that there is some evidence that Columbia’s donors are not happy that this sort of thing seems to run rampant there. According to the Daily Spectator, donations to Columbia’s annual Giving Day
[link removed]
declined significantly this year, marking the first time Giving Day donations have ever declined from the previous year. The value of Giving Day donations declined by 29 percent compared to 2022, and the number of gifts declined from 19,229 to 13,870 (the appeal was postponed in 2023). Correlation isn’t causality, but these numbers sure are interesting.

Washington. The Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law recently filed a civil rights
[link removed]
complaint against the University of Washington that alleges the school’s Jewish students “have been subjected to severe and persistent harassment and discrimination based on their shared ancestry and ethnicity” and that the university has failed to take meaningful steps to “address the hostile climate for Jewish students at UW.” The complaint details antisemitic chants and graffiti, threats of violence, the veneration of Hamas and students being forced out of certain campus areas, and it calls on the US Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights to investigate the school’s actions. In a statement, a UW spokesperson said: “The University
of Washington is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all students, faculty and staff, and we are cooperating with the Office of Civil Rights as it investigates these complaints.”

~~~~~
Drexel. In a recent Instagram
[link removed]
post, the Faculty for Justice in Palestine at Drexel University in Philadelphia stated “Israel does NOT have the right to defend itself.” As part of its harangue, the post states that “Israel needs to be held accountable for the atrocities it’s been committing since the early 20th century.” Of course, the State of Israel was founded in 1948.
Back in The USSR. This week, Claremont College math professor Lenny Fukshansky drew on his childhood in the
[link removed]
Soviet Union to explore the parallels between Soviet-era antisemitism and today’s anti-Israel protests in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, saying “Much like Soviet officials, today’s activists insist that anti-Zionism bears no connection to antisemitism — yet many of their slogans sound painfully familiar.” Fukshansky describes the violent rhetoric that fueled Stalin’s persecution of Jews, saying, “I thought I’d left all this behind when I moved to the states. Then came Oct. 7, 2023,” and since then, “old antisemitic tropes have been picked up, dusted off and sold as anti-Zionist.” And while he admits not every
criticism of Israel is antisemitic, “nearly all the antisemitism I have encountered, here and in the U.S.S.R., has been mixed with anti-Zionism.” In the words of the late Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, “Jew hatred mutates throughout the ages, and anti-Zionism is simply its most recent incarnation.”
Apples and Honey. Portland Hillel recently organized an afternoon of
[link removed]
apple picking to foster relationships between Jewish students from different schools and help students find new ways to express their pride and identity. The event brought together more than 60 students from seven Portland-area campuses ahead of Rosh Hashanah. “To me, Judaism is a really integral part of my identity, and it means a lot to me to get to interact with other people who are also Jewish in fun spaces outside of synagogue,” said one student. “I think that a lot of Jews are nervous about expressing their Judaism publicly, and so being able to claim that joyful Judaism and be proudly Jewish in public spaces is so important,” said Portland Hillel Director
Hannah Sherman.
13 Women. “13 women are still being held captive by Hamas terrorists in Gaza. These are their names and their stories,” says TV host Andy Cohen in an ADL
[link removed]
video posted on Sunday featuring such stars as Mayim Bialik, Patricia Heaton and Debra Messing. In this moving video, different prominent actresses, influencers and activists provide a brief glimpse into the joys and experiences of each of the thirteen women still held by Hamas, and they underscore a clear message more than a year after many of these women were taken: “Together we can unite worldwide and demand their immediate release.”
In These Times. Standing tall in Times Square, Maya and Itay Regev recently described the shock of seeing their fellow
[link removed]
Gen Zers proudly supporting the same terrorists that kidnapped the twins from the Nova music festival and held them hostage for more than 50 days. Maya said she wished these protesters would “open a book and read because they say things that are not true,” but her message for Gen Z really boils down to “I’m 22. It could be them easily.” Looking at a digital billboard with the twins’ faces and discussing their work on an Emmy-nominated documentary about their captivity, Maya said it's crucial that Jews with audiences make themselves heard: “The Jews around the world should really study what’s really happened and talk about it.”
