Dear A.,

On October 7, 2023, everything changed.

The pure barbarism exhibited by Hamas one year ago today made the unimaginable a reality. We witnessed and experienced one of the darkest days in the history of the State of Israel and the Jewish people.

1,200 of our brothers and sisters, parents, and children were taken from us in the most horrific manner. 251 hostages — 97 of whom are still held captive — were stolen from their homes and families. More than 375 kids under the age of 25 lost one parent. 31 lost both parents. The stories of rape, torture, and mutilation are seared in our memories.

Over the past year, Israel has lost 726 soldiers who fought valiantly and courageously to protect Israeli families from Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, the Houthis, and terrorists in Syria, Iraq and the West Bank who have launched attacks on Israel.

Through the trauma, we’ve also witnessed the remarkable resilience and strength of the Israeli people. In each of my trips since October 7, I’ve seen firsthand the Israeli spirit and zest for life and a better future. As I walked through the streets, I saw young families out for a stroll, kids playing, and life continuing. While the deep wound of October 7 will never completely heal, the Israeli people are persevering.

This seven-front war, launched and orchestrated by Iran, continues to test and threaten Israel in unprecedented ways. This wasn’t a war Israel sought, but it is one Israel must and will win.

Throughout the past year, we’ve redoubled our commitment to ensuring that America stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its democratic ally. Together we’ve made our voices heard through our unprecedented support for pro-Israel candidates and through an active grassroots base that has registered millions of calls and emails to the Hill.

Thanks in part to our work together, the overwhelming majority of Democrats and Republicans in Washington are resolute in their support for Israel and a strong U.S.-Israel relationship. Since last October, Congress has approved more than $18 billion in security assistance to Israel, including the largest aid package in Israel’s history.

The next months and years will not be easy, but we will never be deterred. Just as we have for the past 365 days, our community will do everything it can to match the strength, spirit, and determination of the Israeli people.

I encourage you to watch our 30-minute October 7 commemoration by
