President Trump on future coronavirus response bills:

“I told Steve [Mnuchin] today, we’re not doing anything without a payroll tax cut.” (Fox News, May 3, 2020)

Dear Friend,

President Trump actually went on national television last Sunday and said out loud what has been obvious for months: he’s going after Social Security.

American families need help. And we still need to invest more to keep essential workers safe and healthy.

But President Trump is holding any more assistance hostage so he can damage Social Security. That’s beyond the pale.

Social Security contributes more than $900 billion to the economy each year. Slashing its dedicated funding during an economic downturn is literally the opposite of what we should be doing.

Thanks for all you do.

Subject: Trump Commits to Gutting Social Security

Dear Friend,

Americans want help and leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. So far we’ve seen billions for the wealthiest Americans and $1200 for the rest of us.

Rather than proposing solutions to help working families, President Trump is refusing to provide any more assistance to families and states -- UNLESS Congress cuts Social Security’s funding.

Last night on Fox News President Trump sat in front of the Lincoln Memorial and flat out said: “We’re not doing anything without a payroll tax cut.” Ummm, payroll taxes are how we fund Social Security!

Eliminating the main source of Social Security funding is as dumb as it is cruel.

Social Security puts more than $800 billion into the economy each year. Killing its funding in the middle of an economic downtown is exactly the opposite of what we need to do.

This really is urgent. We’ve got to stop this callous and shortsighted idea in its tracks and then hold anyone who supported this scheme accountable.

We know what to do -- are you with us? Click here if we can count on you.

Thank you for all you do.
