As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re taking a closer look at the intersection of cultural identity and LGBTQ+ experiences within the Latinx community. For many LGBTQ+ Hispanic young people, the blend of these identities can present unique challenges—and, importantly, sources of strength. By understanding these experiences, we can provide better support and foster environments where all young people can thrive.
According to our research, 44% of Latinx LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered suicide in the past year, and 16% attempted suicide during the same period. In addition, 60% of Latinx LGBTQ+ youth were unable to access the mental health care they wanted, often due to cultural stigmas, language barriers, and fear of rejection from both family and community. These numbers remind us of the urgent need for tailored support that addresses both the cultural and LGBTQ+ identities of these young people.
