The COVID-19 pandemic is creating extraordinary challenges to health care systems, public health infrastructure, and global health security worldwide. The fallout could devastate countries in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia, and reverse years of U.S. led efforts to reduce preventable diseases. In response, BPC convened a Global Health Task Force and released a new report on April 24 calling on Congress to provide funding to support vulnerable countries, along with recommendations to enhance American health security moving forward. In addition, BPC has released recommendations for relaxing social distancing, based on lessons learned from abroad. For more on BPC’s policy solutions to meet the challenges of COVID-19, click here.

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has awakened the nation to the dire access problems that have long plagued America’s rural health care system and the need for immediate change. On April 21, BPC released a new report entitled, Confronting Rural America’s Health Care Crisis, outlining practical solutions for addressing these challenges. Watch the release event here.

BPC has formed a task force to address behavioral and primary health care integration. In response to the challenges of COVID-19, the group released a series of immediate recommendations to address critical mental health needs facing the country. Moving forward, the task force will focus on policy solutions to address workforce limitations, delivery and payment models, and health IT. A final report will be released later this year.

BPC is working to identify barriers to the provision of comprehensive primary care in the Medicaid program. Issues identified include improving access to care, workforce shortages, and disparities. A final report will be released in July, including recommendations to address these issues.
