John: I have followed attacks on voting rights my entire career, but the recent SAVE Act proposed by Mike Johnson on behalf of his friend Donald Trump left me speechless.
They are using their already discriminatory voter ID practices as a jumping off point to disqualify married women from voting.
Lacking a passport or other proof of citizenship with their married names, they must produce both a birth certificate (with the seal of the state where it was issued; no copies allowed) and a current form of identification—both with the exact same name on them. That could instantly disqualify about 90 percent of all married women without passports or other proof that matches their birth certificates or proof of a legal name change.
- The New Republic ‘How the Republican War on Women Extends to Voting Rights’

The SAVE Act would make some women who have changed their last name provide an increased level of documentation, thus making it more difficult for married women to vote!
It’s no surprise they want women’s votes to not count. Womenoverwhelmingly support Democratic policies like paid family leave, abortion rights, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Once again, Republicans are trying to choose their voters instead of letting voters choose their representatives.
Thankfully, the bill failed in Congress, but it’s only a matter of time until Republicans reintroduce the law. And, with a possible Republican Trifecta coming on Election Day, the stakes have never been higher.
We need to protect our right to vote from GOP attacks. This attack on married women and their right to vote is further evidence that there is no limit to their voting rights attacks.
Will you chip in today to Speak Up PAC to help us fight against these vicious and dangerous attacks on our right to vote? We need everyone to stand up and speak up if we are going to beat the anti-democratic extremists on November 5th!
Together,
Stacey Abrams
