Dear friend of OpenSecrets,
A heartfelt thanks to all of our OpenSecrets community for your support and to those who have given recently. We are all rightfully focused on alleviating the difficulties so many are facing due to COVID-19, and it’s meaningful to us that you are standing by OpenSecrets. Your donations are funding our online classes for remote teaching and guaranteeing that we continue the data collection and analysis necessary to ensure our political system remains transparent and accountable.
The personal financial disclosure (PFD) section on OpenSecrets.org reveals outside income for each member of Congress, their stock holdings, net worth, other assets and liabilities. It's how we know that more than half of our federally elected officials are millionaires and generally don't face the same economic pressures many Americans endure, especially in times of crisis. Even more important, it allows constituents to monitor conflicts of interest, watching out for policy decisions that bring personal enrichment.
This recently updated resource includes complete profiles for the president and members of the Cabinet, presidential candidates and members of Congress, making OpenSecrets the only free source offering this information in a comprehensive and accessible digital format.
PFD reports tell us a lot, but lawmakers’ assets are only disclosed in broad ranges, meaning a to-the-penny snapshot of their wealth is difficult to ascertain. OpenSecrets will keep digging deeper, exposing the conflicts and breaking more stories like Sen. Richard Burr’s suspicious stock selloff prior to the countrywide closures that tanked financial markets. To keep the data current and free to the public we need your support.
