VIDEO OF THE DAY: Trump's co-conspirators get nightmare news in DC court
The unsealing of Jack Smith's 165-page motion and all the damning evidence within it isn't just terrible news for Trump — his entire inner circle had better start hiring lawyers as the consequences of their actions come crashing down.

Jack Smith exposed the insanity of the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling
Holly Brewer, The New Republic: "Special counsel Jack Smith’s latest filing in the January 6 case is an extraordinary and convincing argument for the continued criminal prosecution of former President Trump for his attempts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election. But it also makes glaringly obvious the dangers of the Supreme Court’s decision last year, in Trump v. United States, to grant presidents broad immunity from prosecution for “official” acts, even if those acts are patently criminal. This brief reveals the alarming breach that the Supreme Court opened in the entire system of checks and balances. Every time Smith’s brief mentions the distinction between official and unofficial acts, every time it stresses that someone is a “running mate” or “campaign manager” and not the vice president or a staff member, it points to the extremely large gap in accountability created by the Supreme Court. What if Trump had asked his acting attorney general to arrest his political opponents, starting with the candidate who defeated him, Joe Biden? What if he had asked his acting secretary of defense to commit some heinous act, like invading Congress to stop the certification of Biden’s victory—or killing Pence? Those would seem to fall within the range of official acts that the Supreme Court made unprosecutable. Next time, all a losing president has to do to cling to power is use his appointed officials—even “acting” members of his Cabinet, who do not have to be approved by the Senate, will do. It’s a wide-open field of opportunity. Sure, such a president might then be impeached by the House, but we have seen how nearly impossible it is to win a conviction in the Senate. And the Twenty-Fifth Amendment is almost certainly a pipe dream."

Gun violence holds our communities hostage with fear
Everytown for Gun Safety: This year, American families have suffered through 404 mass shootings — more than one every day. Many of those mass shootings were made so much more deadly by use of an assault weapon, a weapon invented for use on the battlefield, designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. A weapon that has absolutely NO business being in the hands of civilians. Sign the petition and tell Congress that we demand an assault weapons ban before we’re faced with yet another preventable tragedy!
Does Melania Trump really think her pro-choice messaging will fool us?
Moira Donegan, The Guardian: "Just how stupid does Melania Trump think we are? On Wednesday, my colleagues at the Guardian published a leaked excerpt of the former first lady’s memoir, in which the Slovenian-born former model and Donald Trump’s third wife claims to be passionately pro-choice. The leak of Melania’s professed pro-choice sympathies comes, after all, just one day after the ex-president made his own post on Truth Social claiming that he would veto any national abortion ban. That post was made during Tuesday night’s vice-presidential debate, in which Trump’s running mate JD Vance, a maniacally misogynistic and virulently anti-abortion politician, who has called for a national ban on abortion, as well as the limiting of citizenship rights for adults without children, spoke in gauzy, non-specific rhetoric about abortion rights while not actually backing away from his extremist views. These gestures do not reflect a sincere change of Republican policy agendas: they reflect, instead, a self-interested change in Republicans’ vocabulary. The Trump campaign is trying to soften its rhetoric on abortion, to change the words they are using to talk about what they want to inflict on American women. They hope that this will convince voters, especially those in swing states like Nevada and Arizona, where abortion rights initiatives will also be on the ballot come November, that they will not restrict access to the procedure further once in office. As is so often the case with Trump’s public statements, the intent is not to inform, but to deceive. They have not actually changed their goals."

Climate change–induced disasters are killing workers
Alex N. Press, Jacobin: "The Impact Plastics factory in rural Erwin, Tennessee, is located just a few hundred feet from the Nolichucky River. The company, founded in 1987, manufactures plastic injection molded components for original equipment manufacturers at the Erwin plant, located in the aptly named Riverview Industrial Park. Only a parking lot and two roads separate the workplace from the river. Yet the flooding in Erwin led to a particular tragedy, the blame for which Impact Plastics workers pin on their employer: workers were inside the plant that day, and in the hurricane’s immediate wake, six were missing. In the days since, the families of two of those six — Bertha Mendoza and Lidia Verdugo, both Mexican citizens — have confirmed that their loved ones died in the flood. According to the factory’s workers, they were told to report to work that day despite the imminent natural disaster. Jacob Ingram, a mold changer at Impact Plastics, told the Knoxville News Sentinel that even as the water rose outside, managers wouldn’t let employees leave, instead telling them to move their cars away from the rising floodwater. Ingram said he moved his car twice. 'They should’ve evacuated when we got the flash flood warnings, and when they saw the parking lot,' Ingram said. 'When we moved our cars, we should’ve evacuated then . . . we asked them if we should evacuate, and they told us not yet, it wasn’t bad enough. By the time it was bad enough, it was too late.'"

Trump shocks with horrifying promise of violence
Kamala Harris for President: In a recent rambling and incoherent speech, Donald Trump threatened to institute a "Purge"-like day of state-sanctioned violence if he returned to the White House — and that’s just the latest appalling promise from a would-be fascist dictator who has vowed to impose mass deportations, jail his political opponents, cripple our economy, and end democracy as we know it. Dose of Democracy is working with the Kamala Harris campaign to raise money and build the grassroots get-out-the-vote machine that we’ll need to defeat Trump in November. Will you make a donation to help elect Kamala Harris and stop Donald Trump once and for all?
