Earlier this week, Hurricane Helene completely ravaged the Southeastern United States, causing widespread destruction and fatalities. It was the deadliest hurricane to hit the mainland since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected!
While the rest of us were finding ways to support local recovery efforts, Trump used it as a political opportunity - despite the fact that his Project 2025 agenda calls for weakening the government’s response to disasters like this by slashing public disaster relief money and dissolving federal flood insurance.
We all remember when Trump used a Sharpie to extend a hurricane map because it didn’t match his tweets and threw paper towels at hurricane survivors in Puerto Rico. But it could be much, much worse if he’s elected again.
If Trump’s policies were to be implemented, survivors of disasters like Hurricane Helene would be deprived of the financial help they need to rebuild their homes.
His plan would completely gut FEMA, terminate disaster-preparation grants, stop or reduce aid after smaller and more prevalent disasters, and phase out the program that provides almost all of the nation’s flood insurance.
