Dear John,
Elon Musk is rapidly transforming his wealth into a massive source of unaccountable political power aimed at reinstalling Donald Trump in the White House.
Musk’s super PAC now has an estimated 400 staff on the ground in the 7 key battleground states and has effectively taken over Trump’s get-out-the-vote operation. Even more frightening, Trump has said he plans to give Musk a key position in his administration if he wins.
No private individual should have this much power in a democracy, let alone the richest individual in that democracy. So I wrote a column proposing reforms to limit the power of billionaires like Musk — and he responded by attacking me on X, calling me a “miniature wanker” and “Robert Reichtard.”
I am not going to let Elon Musk bully me, and together we must do everything in our power to keep Donald Trump out of the White House.
Will you donate $5 to help educate the public and defeat Elon Musk and Donald Trump in November?
Elon Musk’s extreme rhetoric and conspiracy theories are only becoming more dangerous as Election Day approaches.
Shortly after the second assassination attempt against Donald Trump in September, Elon Musk wrote in a now-deleted post on Twitter/X: “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala,” with an emoji of a person thinking.
Musk later said his post was intended as a joke, but it could easily be interpreted as a call to violence — which is presumably why the Secret Service is investigating it. Today, Musk is reportedly appearing with Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, at the site of the July assassination attempt against Trump.
Musk has also repeatedly posted manipulated images and videos of Kamala Harris, violating X’s own prohibitions against deceptively altered, fabricated, or misleading media, and pushed conspiracy theories about Democrats bringing large numbers of undocumented immigrants to vote in swing states.
Here’s the good news. Our most recent persuasive videos are some of the most effective we’ve ever tested. We’ve also recently launched a video called the “10 Worst Things About The Trump Presidency,” and it’s one of the most viral videos we’ve ever done, with over 2.2 million views on YouTube alone.
But to reach the number of viewers and voters we need to contact between now and November, we’re counting on your help.
So I’m asking you today: Will you donate $5 to help educate the public, stand up to Elon Musk, and defeat Donald Trump?
Thank you for joining with us,
Robert Reich
