Today is World Teacher Day, and I feel deep gratitude for everyone who has chosen to work in classrooms and teach students. For 25 years, that was my calling—a time that brought me joy and fulfillment unlike anything else I've experienced. The bonds between teachers and students are more than just about academics; they can uplift and heal, especially for students dealing with challenges like family or community violence, substance abuse, lack of food or housing, or conflicts with friends. 

Throughout my teaching career, I was fortunate to work with a wonderfully diverse group of students—from all walks of life, with different abilities, and from many ethnic and religious backgrounds. Every day in the classroom was a learning experience not just for them, but for me as well. I often felt that I learned as much from them as they did from me, maybe even more. Their stories, dreams, and strength taught me valuable lessons about humanity, empathy, and the amazing potential within each person.

In 2020, I decided to retire from teaching to become a full-time legislator. Yet every single day, I carry the stories of my students with me. Their experiences fuel my passion and guide my decisions as I work to shape the future of Delaware's education system. I remain deeply grateful to and inspired by the classroom teachers who make the well-being and education of our young people the focus of their lives.

On this World Teacher Day, let's celebrate and honor the educators who go above and beyond, who recognize the significant influence they have not just academically but also emotionally and socially. They are the heroes who light the way for our youth, and for that, we owe them our deepest appreciation and support.
