We just co-signed a letter with a broad coalition of advocacy groups to House Speaker Mike Johnson with one simple message: Certify the results of the presidential election on January 6, 2025.

John, election certification is not optional. But recently, when asked if he would commit to certifying the election results, House Speaker Johnson answered that he would do so “if we have a free, fair and safe election.”

Committing to follow the Constitution and certify election results should not require any caveats.

These types of comments sow doubt in our elections, which are the bedrock of our democracy. We want to make this very clear: it is the duty of Congress to accept the ultimate outcome of the election and promptly certify the result to allow the smooth and peaceful transfer of power.

We know what can happen when Congress ignores that duty, and we can’t let that happen again.

In 2020, 84 people served as "fake electors” and 138 House Republicans, including the current Speaker Mike Johnson, objected to certifying the results. Election denialism culminated in a violent attack on the Capitol on January 6th—which is why it’s so critical that we all unite around the importance of accepting the results of elections, no matter the outcome.

There is no reason to doubt the fairness of our election system. The thing to be wary of is fear mongering and election denialism. We are watching these threats closely and are committed to protecting election certification in any way we can.
