If you know me, you know there’s nothing I’m more passionate about than supporting Colorado’s incredible public schools. But you might not know why. I faced a lot of obstacles at home as a kid after my mom hurt her back and was overprescribed opioids which led to a decades-long addiction, including heroin. The only reason I had a chance to overcome my circumstances was because of my access to great public schools and teachers. My schools were my safe place and prepared me to succeed, no matter where I came from. I became the first in my family to graduate from high school and college — going down a much different path than I was likely to go — even serving in the United States House of Representatives. Today is World Teachers' Day, so I wanted to take a moment to say thanks — and to advocate for every child’s right to the same high-quality public education that I received. Throughout my education, I had so many incredible teachers — but there’s one in particular who stands out all these years later: my 5th and 6th grade teacher, Ms. Jurgemeyer. She believed in me and pushed me to do better and follow my dreams. I understand firsthand that a great education can make all the difference in a child’s life — and I want you to know that when my extremist colleagues in Congress try to put public education on the chopping block, I will fight back. Every single time.
Thank you, Brittany |
