Dear John

It’s been an exciting month at CPRE. We’ve submitted our response to the National Planning Policy Framework consultation and attended the Labour Party Annual Conference, where we advocated for positive change to help our countryside thrive - now and for future generations. You can find out more about this below – alongside a brand new case study on accessible social housing.

As autumn brings its vibrant shades of orange and red to the countryside, guest writer Peter Lau shares his top five accessible woodlands for you to explore. Keep reading to find out more.

Finally, October is Free Wills Month, so we wanted to invite you to learn more about leaving a legacy with CPRE, and about our free will writing service.

Planning for the future - Our NPPF consultation response

We've submitted our response to the consultation on changes to the National Planning Policy Framework, which we developed together with our local CPRE network. Our response addresses key issues, including the need for a mix of genuinely affordable housing tenures, opposing the reclassification of Green Belt as ‘grey belt’, and supporting renewable energy on our roofs.

Affordable, accessible, and sustainable housing is essential for a decent life

Yet, many rural areas are failing to meet these needs. Our research found only 17 of 45 rural authorities had targets for accessible housing, with just nine requiring wheelchair-accessible homes. Shockingly, a wheelchair user could wait up to 47 years for a suitable home. Find out more about Gail and Carla's battle for accessible housing.

Our time at the Labour Party Annual Conference

Last week, we attended the Labour Party Annual Conference in Liverpool and engaged with MPs on key issues impacting the countryside and rural communities. We participated in roundtables and fringe events, and held discussions with numerous MPs. You can find out more about our key takeaways by clicking the link below.

Autumn for all

After a mountain biking accident 10 years ago left him paralysed, photographer Peter Lau has discovered the importance of nature being accessible for all. This autumn, he shares his five favourite forests for enjoying the season’s stunning colours, including the Forest of Dean and Sherwood Forest. Each offers accessible trails and facilities, allowing everyone to experience the beauty and tranquillity of nature as the seasons begin to change.

Free Wills Month is here

If it feels like the right time to write your will, you can do so for free today with our partner Farewill. While there is no obligation, by joining supporters who have pledged a gift in their will to CPRE, you can let your love of the countryside live on. Income from gifts in wills is vital for CPRE to continue campaigning to ensure the countryside is at the heart of the government’s priorities, so that people and wildlife can thrive.

It takes less than 30 minutes to write your will online - to get started click the link below, or email [email protected]  for more information.

Join us and make a difference for the countryside

Best wishes,

Lewis
