Hi John,
On Monday the UK government co-hosted a global Covid-19 summit to boost funding for a new vaccine and treatments. Thank you to those who took our urgent action calling on the UK government as a co-host to attach conditions on universal access on all funds pledged.

Almost £7 billion was raised. Billions of pounds of public money has now been added to the pot with the UK alone contributing £544 million. It’s a welcome step. The world needs a vaccine. But without governments intervening now to ensure that any vaccine produced will be available patent-free and affordable for all, there’s a huge risk that big pharma will profit at the expense of people around the world.

Even though the summit is over, we need to keep up the pressure. Will you join over 13,000 people calling on our government to attach conditions to public funding so that a Covid-19 vaccine will be patent-free and affordable for all?

EU leaders and the UK have committed to make any Covid-19 vaccine accessible and affordable to all, and to work collaboratively to end this global pandemic. But we’re worried that they are not going to do what’s necessary and take on big pharma. Universal access can only become a reality if governments intervene to stop the profit-hungry pharmaceutical industry from patenting a vaccine.

The way our pharmaceutical system works means the world will rely on private companies to manufacture a vaccine, once it has been discovered through public money. Big pharmaceutical companies take over the development of treatments meaning they can hold patents on a vaccine and can name their price.

But profiteering from a pandemic is unacceptable and our government can ensure that it doesn’t happen. Attaching conditions on all UK public funding to prevent big pharma patents could ensure that any vaccine developed is affordable, accessible and available to everyone in the world.

Call on the government to put their commitment to universal access into action. Join us to demand patent-free Covid-19 vaccines so that they’re affordable for all countries and free to the public.

A pharmaceutical system that is not fit for purpose is what has allowed leaders like Donald Trump to offer "large sums of money" to obtain exclusive rights over a potential Covid-19 vaccine from a German company "but for the US only”. And it’s what allowed pharma giant, Gilead to request an additional monopoly over a potential treatment for coronavirus despite already holding exclusive patents on the drug around the world until 2038.

It’s clear we cannot rely on big pharma alone to safeguard our health.
Our government has the chance to intervene by ensuring that big pharma patents and monopolies aren’t prioritised over the health of people here and around the world.

We are campaigning for the government to attach conditions on all UK funding for a Covid-19 vaccine so that big pharmaceuticals don’t charge extortionate prices, and leave millions of people around the world unable to access it.
