Even though college campuses across the country are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the battle over free speech on Israel and Palestine continues to rage. Last week, Tufts University leaders condemned the Office of Campus Life’s decision to present an award ([link removed]) to the university’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter. University president Anthony Monaco and other officials accused the group of anti-Semitism due to its support for the non-violent Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. This smear is just the latest in an organized attempt by the Israeli government and its U.S. supporters to intimidate and silence critics of Israel. Perhaps the most disturbing tactic deployed by pro-Israel groups is the Canary Mission, a blacklisting website that accuses students critical of Israel of anti-Semitism in an effort to intimidate them and hinder their ability to gain employment after graduation.
