July was the 14th straight month of global record-breaking heat. Every year, 40+ American workers die from heat exposure. This is entirely preventable — farm workers and construction workers are disproportionately impacted, and they deserve protections to keep them safe.
More Perfect Union spoke to farmworkers in North Carolina who often operate in dangerous working conditions. They shared that, even in 100°+ heat, they’re responsible for securing their own drinking water at work — their employers have no legal obligation to do so.
Construction workers and farm workers often need to wear helmets and goggles that exacerbate the extreme heat. They are likely to experience heat related injuries, including heat exhaustion, permanent damage to eyes, and in some cases, even death.
Many businesses across the country are refusing to adjust their safety standards to protect workers from extreme heat, but thankfully, the Biden administration is taking action.

The Department of Labor (DOL) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently proposed a new heat standard rule titled Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings.
This new rule would protect workers from extreme heat by requiring employers to allow workers breaks and access to shade and water on the job. But the Chamber of Commerce and the greedy construction industry are pulling out all the stops to oppose this new rule.
We need to make sure the DOL and OSHA need to hear from us and know that we support the new proposed heat standard rule.
