As we recognize LGBTQ+ History Month, Friend, we celebrate the courageous trailblazers who have paved the way for progress and equality. This month is a powerful reminder of the strength of our community and the ongoing journey toward acceptance and understanding.

According to our 2024 U.S. National Survey, most LGBTQ+ young people (65%) reported knowing at least one older LGBTQ+ person they would consider a role model or someone they look up to. Having a supportive adult in their life can lower the chances of suicide by 40%, a testament to the profound impact that trailblazers and allies have in fostering an inclusive and life-affirming world.

Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002)

Sylvia Rivera, alongside Marsha P. Johnson, co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) House to provide services for homeless queer youth. A vocal advocate, Rivera fought tirelessly for the inclusion of transgender people, people of color, and drag queens in the broader movement for LGBTQ+ rights, ensuring that no one was left behind in the fight for equality.

Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992)

Marsha P. Johnson, famously known as the queen who threw a shot glass and declared, “I got my civil rights!” during the Stonewall Uprising, made an indelible mark on the LGBTQ+ rights movement. She co-founded the STAR House with her friend Sylvia Rivera, serving as a "drag mother" to provide food, clothing, and a sense of family for queer youth in need.
Harvey Milk (1930-1978)

As the first non-incumbent openly LGBTQ+ politician elected to office in the nation, Harvey Milk gained national attention in December 1977. In his short but impactful time on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Milk played a crucial role in defeating California Proposition 6, which aimed to remove LGBTQ+ educators from the state’s school systems and helped to enact anti-discrimination legislation.
These trailblazers laid the groundwork for the progress we see today, and their legacy continues to inspire us to push forward. At The Trevor Project, we carry their spirit of advocacy and community support, providing crucial resources for LGBTQ+ young people.
