Hurricane Helene has hit East Tennessee and other southern states hard, leaving behind devastation across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Virginia. Communities have been reeling from the deadly flooding and the destruction of homes, roads, and schools. Here in TN, Newport has seen some of the worst flooding, with families still struggling to clean up their neighborhoods and pick up the pieces of their lives. We’ve all seen the photos of the damage, and it’s nothing short of heartbreaking.
On top of that, you’ve probably seen a lot of chatter online about the response to the storm. Let me tell you, talk is cheap—especially when it’s full of misinformation. Some folks are out there spreading rumors, but I’m here to set the record straight and share the facts about what’s really happening in our state.
Here’s what’s actually going on right now on the ground:
- The Tennessee National Guard has deployed 401 soldiers and airmen, delivered over 67,500 lbs of food and water, and moved 93 truckloads of debris out of our communities.
- 1,500 lbs of household supplies have been delivered to families in need.
- The National Guard has rescued 105 people through airlifts.
- The Department of Defense has green-lit a Title 10 request, bringing in more active duty personnel and equipment to help with recovery efforts.
- TEMA has received 100 Starlink satellite systems to ensure emergency responders stay connected while they help our neighbors.
This isn’t just talk—this is real action. Our first responders, the Tennessee National Guard, and volunteers from across the state are out there every single day making a difference. These are the facts.
While misinformation and rumors might be flying around, East Tennesseans know better. We don’t let noise distract us from the real task at hand—helping our neighbors and rebuilding our community. If you want to make a difference, I encourage you to donate to local organizations or volunteer your time (see details below for an event on Saturday).
Now is not the time for division or distractions. Now is the time for action and unity. Let’s focus on getting our neighbors back on their feet and showing the strength of East Tennessee.
Thank you for standing with me and for standing with our community.
