Every time we think we’ve hit rock bottom, Trump and the Republicans find a way to go lower.
In the midst of a pandemic, with over 70,000 Americans now dead, they have given up on any pretense of trying to help and are back to their old ways. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is forcing the Senate to convene in person. He is aiming to push through a set of unqualified, hyperpartisan nominees to American courts and to rubber stamp Trump’s choice of loyalists for critical positions, including John Ratcliffe as Director of National Intelligence. Our Senators must do everything they possibly can to prevent these nominees from being seated in positions of power.
So we are asking you urgently to contact your Senators ([link removed][UNIQID]) and tell them to vote NO on Director of National Intelligence nominee John Ratcliffe, DC Court of Appeals nominee Justin Walker, and 5th Circuit Court nominee Cory Wilson.
It’s also up to our Members of Congress to push through legislation that helps Americans when the Republicans in power have left them high and dry. To overcome their apathy, we need to build power. So we’re joining with Indivisible affiliates across America to raise awareness and pressure our members of Congress to pass legislation that ensures real aid and protection, not just corporate bailouts.
Tomorrow, Thursday, May 7th, is Indivisible’s National Day of Action in support of the Essential Worker Bill of Rights. This piece of legislation was proposed by Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congressman Ro Khanna and is designed to protect essential workers from harm during the pandemic.
Essential workers are required to show up in person at their workplaces during the ongoing pandemic, and their work involves interacting closely with people at an elevated risk of infection. Sadly, many of these workers are underpaid and lack essential protections.
As stated in the Files for Progress memo ([link removed][UNIQID]) on the legislation, the Essential Worker Bill of Rights includes paid sick leave, pay increases, free access to personal protective equipment (PPE), and family and medical leave.
We are joining Senator Warren and Congressman Khanna in calling for this bill of rights to be included in the fourth stimulus package. It aligns with our own demands for the bill ([link removed][UNIQID]) , as well as Indivisible National’s People’s Bailout ([link removed][UNIQID]) initiative.
We are asking you to join in the National Day of Action supporting the Essential Worker Bill of Rights.
* Contact your Members of Congress ([link removed][UNIQID]) and ask them to include and support the proposal in the upcoming stimulus bill.
* On May 7th, follow the hashtag #ProtectEssentialWorkers on Twitter to raise awareness of this initiative on social media!
Finally, help us defend a blue House seat in a critical special election on May 12th!
On May 12th, CA-25 will be having a special election to replace Congresswoman Katie Hill, who was ousted from office due to a scandal. Pro-choice candidate Christy Smith is running for her seat and is being challenged by an extremist Republican candidate. The race is neck-and-neck and we really need your support to keep this seat blue!
On Thursday, May 7th, at 5 PM, join us at a virtual phone bank ([link removed][UNIQID]) and training kickoff sponsored by NARAL. Then pick a phone banking shift ([link removed][UNIQID]) between May 9th and May 11th to get out the vote for Christy Smith!
ISF Spotlight
We sent our open letter on our CARES-2 demands to our Members of Congress. We got over 80 signatures on the letter, which you can read here ([link removed][UNIQID]) . Thank you for signing on to the open letter! Our Members of Congress are influenced by the voices of regular people when they are united. Without you participating in our calls to action, the only voices our Congressional representatives would hear would be those of corporate lobbyists. We’re proud to be part of the effort to tip the scales in favor of regular Americans.
