Catching Up With Quigley: Week in Review

I hope you had a good week. I wanted to recap some of the work I did while in our district.

1. Visited Community Project Funding Sites

In March, I was pleased to submit 15 local projects for funding consideration through the House Committee on Appropriations. Spanning locations across our district, I know these projects will touch countless lives. This week, I visited three of the sites I submitted for funding consideration: Horner Park Field House, Rockwell Station, and Graceland West Community Association.

At Horner Park, my funding request will hopefully help them replace the field house roof and make updates to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. At Rockwell Station, the Chicago Transit Authority is seeking funding to build a new platform and update their digital signage. During my visit, I met with CTA employees to better understand how these changes will impact riders and what additional stations require updates. Lastly, I headed to Graceland West to meet with the Community Association working to adapt to more frequent flooding events. I requested $2 million to allow the community to construct green alleys with permeable pavement. The project is expected to increase surface infiltration and decrease the amount of water diverted to the sewer system. This will help recapture storm water and improve flood management during rain events

I am hopeful that Congress can come together to pass this funding so residents throughout our district can reap the rewards of these critical projects.

2. Toured a Local Business Working to Go Green

On Wednesday, I toured Half Acre Beer Co., a local business with plans to modernize and reduce its emissions. They are currently working with the Department of Energy to access funds through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to decarbonize their facility. Specifically, they are hoping to introduce technology to capture CO2 that is naturally produced during the fermentation process and store it for reuse. They are also looking to add rooftop solar to meet their electricity needs. It was wonderful to see a business in our district taking action in the fight against climate change and hoping to capitalize on the opportunities created by the IRA. 3. Kicked Off the 23rd Annual AIDS Run & Walk

Last Sunday, I helped kick off this year's AIDS Run & Walk. Since 2009, I have been proud to take part in this event and join the tens of thousands of people who have come together to get moving and raise funds to support those impacted by HIV/AIDS.

As vice-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, ending HIV transmission and expanding resources for people living with HIV is one of my top priorities. I've used my role on the Appropriations Committee to bring more funding to our nation’s Housing Opportunities for People With AIDS (HOPWA) program. HOPWA helps low-income folks with HIV/AIDS across the country access safe and affordable housing. Additionally, I have spent years working to combat the stigma around HIV status by ending the blood donation ban and modifying military enlistment restrictions. This year's event was an incredible reminder of the strength of this community, the progress we have made, and the work left to be done.

REMINDER: Hosting a PACT Act Clinic

On Tuesday, October 8 my office will be hosting a PACT ACT clinic to connect veterans with healthcare enrollment, toxic exposure screening, claim filing, and more! The clinic will include representatives from Jessie Brown Medical Center, Hines Medical Center, and Veteran Service Officers. No RSVP is required!
