Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (DEW) Director Stephen D. Dackin announced [ [link removed] ] more than $1.5 million in grant funding has been allocated to schools in several Ohio communities, including Springfield, as they work through challenges from a significant increase in Haitian migrants over the past several years.
Springfield schools receiving funding include:
* Springfield City Schools: $1,346,000
* Springfield Preparatory and Fitness Academy: $12,000
* Springfield Sports Academy: $12,000
Funds will be used to enhance essential learning programs for all students in the community and to provide additional resources to support educational needs, including translation technologies, interpreters, mental health services, and more.
“We want all students across Ohio to have the resources they need to reach their full, God-given potential,” said Governor DeWine. “Schools in Springfield and other communities that have been dealing with sudden increases in their student population have no doubt been strained. These funds will help to relieve some of this pressure and create a better learning environment for all students in these communities.”
Other Ohio cities are working to address challenges stemming from the increase in Haitian migrants, including Findlay and Lima. Governor DeWine also announced that funding has been provided to Findlay City Schools ($100,000) and Lima City Schools ($36,882), largely to support translation technologies such as interpreter earbuds or mini handheld translators.

Baughman H2Ohio Wetland Restoration [ [link removed] ]
As part of Governor DeWine’s H2Ohio [ [link removed] ] initiative, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) celebrated the completion of the Baughman H2Ohio Wetland Restoration Project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Baughman H2Ohio wetland project restores 19 acres of wetlands, which will filter sediment and nutrients from the water before it flows into the Maumee River Watershed. The newly completed wetland will also address significant flooding issues that previously impacted nearby neighborhoods. Reducing nutrient and sediment loads in the Maumee River Watershed is critical to addressing harmful algal blooms in the Western Lake Erie Basin.
“Wetlands are vital to our overall H2Ohio plan to improve water quality in Lake Erie,” said Governor DeWine. “We are committed to completing these important projects that we know will have positive impacts on the waterways and surrounding communities.”

Governor DeWine issued the following statement following news of the death of former Cincinnati Reds star Pete Rose:
"Fran and I and our family are deeply saddened to learn of Pete Rose’s passing. In 1963, our parish priest, Father Bertke, took my dad and me to the Reds' Opening Day game. It happened to be Pete Rose’s first game for the Reds. Fran and our family had the joy of watching Pete play for the Reds hundreds of times over the years. No one ever worked harder or hustled more than Pete Rose. No one ever got more out of his natural talent than Pete Rose. It was a true joy to watch him play baseball. Fran and I extended our sincerest condolences to Pete’s children and family."
