Email from Rep Feenstra In this week's roundup: Urging passage of the Farm Bill and my letter to USDA and USTR over Mexico's ban on American corn.     Dear Friend, In this week's roundup: Urging passage of the Farm Bill and my letter to USDA and USTR over Mexico's ban on American corn. That and more – remember to follow my Facebook page by clicking here and my Twitter page by clicking here to stay up-to-date throughout the week! WE MUST GET THE FARM BILL SIGNED INTO LAW BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR More than 130 days ago, my Republican colleagues on the House Agriculture Committee and I passed the Farm Bill. This legislation is the result of conversations with our farmers and producers about their priorities, needs, and interests. We strengthened crop insurance, increased reference prices, doubled funding for trade programs, and included protections to keep our farmland away from China and our foreign adversaries. Between low commodity prices and declining farm income, Senate Democrats need to work with Republicans to pass the Farm Bill and deliver certainty and relief for our producers and Iowa agriculture. Feenstra Calls for Immediate Passage of the Farm Bill Today, U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) released the following statement as the one-year extension of the 2018 Farm Bill is set to expire today: "Nearly 130 days ago, my Republican colleagues on the House Agriculture Committee and I passed the Farm Bill. THE SUPREME COURT WAS RIGHT TO OVERTURN CHEVRON The Supreme Court was right to overturn Chevron, hold rogue federal agencies accountable, and prioritize local control over federal overreach. A bloated government bureaucracy with unchecked power only hurts our families, farmers, businesses, and economy. Read my full column below! SCOTUS was right to overrule Chevron Doctrine This year, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a major blow to the federal bureaucracy. On June 28, a 6-3 majority of the Court issued a landmark opinion overruling the Chevron Doctrine. Read More MY WEEKLY COLUMN: PROTECTING AMERICAN CORN GROWERS FROM MEXICO'S UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES Back in 2020, outgoing Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador issued a decree effectively banning the import of American corn over unfounded and baseless concerns about the safety of genetically modified (GM) varieties. This action is beyond concerning – it would be devastating for our corn growers and our economy as 90% of our corn is genetically modified and 25% of our corn crop is exported to Mexico annually. According to some studies, this reckless decision could cause nearly $14 billion in losses for U.S. corn growers, cut $30.5 billion from U.S. GDP, and eliminate more than 32,000 American jobs. That’s why – as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee which handles trade matters – I led 20 of my colleagues urging U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to continue to engage with the newly inaugurated President of Mexico over Mexico’s ban on GM corn imports and other trade barriers affecting American businesses. Read more in my weekly column below. My weekly column: Protecting American corn growers from Mexico's unfair trade practices On October 1st, the new President of Mexico - Claudia Sheinbaum - was officially sworn into office.
