Hurricane Helene hit Georgia hard. The devastation is widespread and our hearts break for those who have experienced unimaginable loss and the communities now facing challenges on what will be a long path to recovery.
Marty, the girls, and I have been on the ground as we work closely with emergency management officials, law enforcement, first responders, linemen, and community members to ensure every community has the resources and support needed in the wake of this devastation.
Our efforts leading up to and immediately following the storm include:
Declaring a State of Emergency across all 159 counties in Georgia until Wednesday, October 9 to help us meet the ongoing needs of the Hurricane Helene response and recovery.
Requesting an emergency disaster declaration from FEMA, so we have access to every federal resource necessary to help Georgians fully recover.Upon my urging to review our expedited disaster declaration request again, FEMA has named 30 additional Georgia counties to its federal disaster declaration.I will not waver in ensuring all our impacted communities continue receiving all available resources and support.
Issuing an Executive Order to deploy the Georgia National Guard to assist in recovery and relief operations.Three days later, we authorized an additional 1,000 Georgia National Guard to assist in those ongoing recovery efforts as needed in addition to the 250 heading into the field already.
We’ve had teams working tirelessly to clear roads and deliver supplies to ensure that those hit the hardest have what they need to support their communities.
First Lady Marty Kemp and I met with law enforcement and emergency management officials in Nashville, Douglas, Hazlehurst, and Alamo, and saw first-hand the scope of the damage, as well as the coordinated response from state, local, and federal agencies and partners. There are countless response teams and volunteers helping these communities rebuild, and we are blown away by their commitment and generosity.
We visited some of Helene’s hardest-hit Georgia communities where we were honored to meet some hardworking linemen from all over the country who are here helping get Georgians’ power back on in Dublin and Laurens County. We’re thankful for their professionalism and bravery!
I’m deeply grateful to the first responders, volunteers, and community members who have stepped up during this time of need. Your commitment to your community and resilience are inspiring.
