*Following Hurricane Helene, Ohioans Urged to Research Charitable Organizations When Making Donations in Order to Avoid Storm-Relief Scams *

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—As Ohioans step up to support storm relief efforts in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene throughout much of the southeastern United States, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Commerce [ [link removed] ] Division of Financial Institutions [ [link removed] ] urge those who want to donate to be careful and make sure that the organizations they support with financial donations are legitimately helping victims of the storm.

“Our fellow Americans need our help in the aftermath of this terrible storm,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “Ohioans have always stepped up to the plate when disaster strikes, whether at home or across the nation.”

Donations are critical for recovery and relief efforts following natural disaster. Individuals who are interested in making a donation to support storm cleanup and recovery efforts are encouraged to do so through state or regional chapters of reputable national organizations such as the American Red Cross [ [link removed] ], United Way [ [link removed] ], and Salvation Army [ [link removed] ]. Organizations such as these offer various avenues for donations that will go toward recovery efforts.

Ohio Department of Commerce Director Sherry Maxfield says Ohioans should be aware of the potential for fraudsters who attempt to exploit the goodwill of individuals who desire to help communities that have been impacted by the recent severe weather.

“Unfortunately, scams and fraudulent activity often present a very real threat following natural disasters; the current situation involving Hurricane Helene is likely no exception,”  Director Maxfield said. “Ohioans are generous individuals who want to make a difference, especially in times of crisis. That is why it is imperative that they take the necessary steps to protect themselves from scammers while also helping to ensure their money goes where they intend for it to go.”

Ohioans who are interested in donating should be aware of important tips to help ensure their donation is used appropriately. These tips include:

* *Donate to Trusted Charities*: Only donate to charities with a proven track record in handling disaster relief. Individuals should be cautious of unsolicited requests for donations.
* *Conduct Research*: Always verify an organization’s charitable reputation by conducting an online search, and consider using resources like the BBB's Wise Giving Alliance [ [link removed] ] or Charity Watch [ [link removed] ].

* *Crowdfunding Caution*: Exercise caution when donating to individuals on crowdfunding sites. If you do, make sure it’s someone you personally know and trust.

* *Secure Payment Methods*: Avoid making donations via cash, gift cards, via wiring money services such as Venmo, or cryptocurrency. By making donations via credit cards, Ohioans can stay better protected from financial concerns.

* *Verify Text Donations*: Before making a donation via text, be sure to confirm the charity’s number on its website to ensure it is a valid number.

Governor DeWine has activated the Ohio National Guard and mobilized critical public safety communications equipment and staff to support the state of North Carolina in its recovery from flooding and damage.
