John,

A giant in the fight for civil rights, equal treatment for minority groups, and the fight against apartheid in South Africa, we remember and honor the life and legacy of Labor and Civil Rights icon, Bill Lucy. Even if he was not as well known as some others in the Civil Rights Movement, Bill Lucy was instrumental in popularizing a four-word evocation of self-esteem and dignity—“I Am A Man,” the rallying cry for Striking sanitation workers and their supporters in Memphis, TN, in 1968.

In 1972, exasperated with the AFL-CIO’s neutrality in the presidential race between Richard Nixon, who most labor leaders felt was anti-union, and George McGovern, Bill Lucy became a co-founder of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists.

The Labor family is also in mourning for two other giants in the battle for civil and worker rights: longtime President of the United Food and Commercial Workers’ Minority Coalition and a tireless leader and mentor to many, Don Cash. As a member of both the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, through his unwavering commitment to justice and equity, Don Cash has helped to transform the lives of countless workers, empowering them to fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity on the job.

Then there’s Bill Camp; he has spent the last 25 years as a leader and the head of the Sacramento Central Labor Council. Bill, who was born on a farm in South Carolina in 1944, started in the fight for civil rights in the trenches of the deep south during the Civil Rights Movement before moving on to help organize farm workers in California fields, under the leadership of Cesar Chavez and Delores Huerta. Bill Camp has spent a literal lifetime of sacrifice and fighting for the rights of others.

Both Don Cash and Bill Camp were peers and allies of Bill Lucy, and all three leave behind a legacy of progress in the Labor Movement, but more importantly in the progressive movement and the fight for dignity, equity, respect, freedom, and human rights for working families everywhere.
