Hi John.
I understand many Kansans have concerns about our southern border.
This shouldn’t be an issue used by politicians to just score political points. Both parties should work to fix this issue once and for all.
That’s why I’ve consistently pushed back against my own party and urged the Biden administration to negotiate with House Republicans on a comprehensive immigration reform bill.
I’m pushing to enforce the laws we already have in place, improve equipment, and upgrade technology to detect illegal drugs.
There’s certainly a lot more work that needs to be done. That said, I am pleased to say there has been some recent progress. For example, I was glad to work alongside both Republicans and Democrats to pass a critical bill that has strong border security investments.
That includes support for another 2,000 border patrol agents and more resources for law enforcement to bring order to the border, like new technology to stop the illegal smuggling of fentanyl.
I’ve also voted for several bipartisan compromise budgets that include border security investments. Some of this legislation was opposed by my Democratic colleagues, but I decided to vote for it because it was the right thing to do for Kansas.
Specifically, these budgets have included funding for –
• Hiring more law enforcement and border patrol officers; • New inspection equipment at border ports of entry; • Additional air and marine assets; • New border security technology; and • Opioid detection equipment.
I was glad to lead a congressional visit to the Long Beach Container Terminal, one of the busiest ports in the nation. We met with Customs and Border Patrol agents to discuss how to prevent harmful substances like fentanyl from entering our country.
I'll keep pushing for a comprehensive and bipartisan solution to address our immigration challenges. That must include a roadmap to citizenship, especially for Dreamers and people who served in our military. We need a smart, humane, and fair immigration system that remains true to our values.
My job is to serve every person and corner of our community, regardless of party. Whether we agree on every issue or not is beside the point. Everyone deserves a government that works for them.
