While the costs of living have skyrocketed, the federal minimum wage has remained stagnant at $7.25 an hour since 2009, leaving workers with less money to afford to get by. In the United States, 40 percent of households can’t afford basic necessities like a roof over their heads, food, and healthcare.

Income inequality is currently at a 100-year high, with our broken tax system letting millionaires and billionaires pay less than working families.

That’s why Justice Democrats Rep. Summer Lee just introduced the American Stability Act—the largest wage increase and tax cut for working families in U.S. history. Add your name to show your support →

This bill would stop putting billionaires before working people by:

• Immediately increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, then increasing it by 10% annually until it reaches $20/hour in 2024 dollars. After that, the stability wage will automatically adjust every year based on inflation and other factors;
  
  
• Creating a Cost-of-Living tax exemption that would prevent basic living expenses up to the stability wage from being taxed by the federal government;
  
  
• Reforming the tax code so that tax brackets automatically adjust with wage growth, maintaining fairness over time, while imposing a 3% surtax on incomes over $1 million and a 5% surtax on incomes over $15 million to ensure the wealthiest few pay their fair share.

This is exactly the kind of bold change we need to unrig our broken system and achieve economic justice for working families, but it’s going to take a ton of public pressure to build the Congressional support needed to pass it into law.
