Washington, DC -Today, Congressman Van Drew sent a letter to Atlantic City Electric (ACE), urging the company to stop its increased efforts to disconnect electricity for customers who are struggling to pay their bills. These intensified tactics include bringing in non-union contractors to visit hundreds of homes a day in an effort to collect payments from delinquent customers.
"Families across South Jersey are facing tough financial times due to rising electricity costs, and instead of showing compassion, Atlantic City Electric is prioritizing profits over people," said Congressman Van Drew. "Rather than finding ways to support their customers, they are hiring non-union contractors to intimidate those who cannot afford these outrageous bills by knocking on their doors and threatening to cut off their electricity. The money spent on these aggressive shutoff tactics could be better used to ensure the accuracy of their meters and billing. I urge ACE to stop their shutoff measures and focus on real solutions that genuinely benefit the people of South Jersey."
On October 8th at 3:30 PM ET, Congressman Van Drew will be hosting a field hearing in Mays Landing, South Jersey, to address the growing energy crisis in the area. Alongside other members of Congress from across the nation, he will explore the causes of rising energy bills on local, state, and national levels.
