Weed of the Month: Emerging Invasive Species
The best time to control and stop invasive species is when they are first emerging. Early detection and eradication prevent and lessen the amount of harm an invasive species can cause to native vegetation and ecosystems, as well as reduces the cost of management over time. Below are some emerging invasive species in Minnesota or nearby states to look out for:
Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum): An aggressive invasive that has invaded forests throughout the eastern US, and has spread into Wisconsin.
Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana): A common ornamental and landscape species native to Asia, it has escaped through cross-pollination in eastern states, invading forest edges, prairies, and wetlands.
Japanese Hop (Humulus japonicus): A non-woody annual vine growing up to 35 feet long. It invades the shores of waterways and smothers native vegetation. Although it is related to common hops, Japanese hops are not used for brewing and can carry mildew that can infect common hops.
Lesser Celandine (Ficaria verna): An invasive species that grows and flowers early in the spring, out-competing native spring ephemerals. It is often found in forests near water.
If you identify any of the the above species, or any other invasive species, please report your findings!
